Optimizing Brain Nutrition
This research theme focuses on the various known and emerging nutrients linked to brain health (cognition and depression) in older adults. Nutrients that have specifically gained interest are folate, vitamin B12, vitamin B6 (homocysteine mechanism) and omega-3 fatty acids. Investigations will focus in on levels of nutrients required to achieve optimal brain health as well as the best means for promoting this enhanced nutrition (e.g. food choices, fortified foods, supplements). In addition to specific nutrients, this theme also addresses how balanced nutrition and the absence of malnutrition can promote cognition and mood. Rather than specific nutrients, macronutrients, sufficient calories and diet that meet base requirements for nutrients will be investigated.
