Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging
As a charitable, non-profit foundation, the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging (RIA) links research, training and practice to enhance care and quality of life for older adults. The primary goal is to enhance care of older adults in both community-based and Long Term Care (LTC) environments through the development and implementation of innovative research and training programs. The research collaborations and training initiatives fostered by the RIA are practical and have a direct link to resident quality of life. A-HA is one of nine research theme areas at the RIA.
The RIA is a product of the philanthropic spirit and vision of Dr. Ron Schlegel, whose family has been providing Long Term Care (LTC) to Ontario residents since the 1950's. Owner and operator of eleven retirement and LTC facilities (Schlegel Villages), across Ontario, he committed more than $6 Million to develop and launch the RIA in 2005 - $4 Million of which went to four Schlegel Research Chairs, and $200,000 per year for 10 years to RIA infrastructure.

Schlegel Villages
Also referred to as "living research environments", the Schlegel Villages are home to 3,000 residents who all benefit from the culture of research and innovation that the RIA fosters, while contributing beyond the communities they live in to system-wide policy and practice improvement. Materials and information are shared with others providing care to older adults in community and long-term care settings.
